Below is a copy of a prayer that I did as the invocation for the City of San Antonio Council meeting on March 21, 2013 as the guest of City Councilmember Leticia Ozuna of District 3. It was a great experience and I thoroughly appreciated the invitation.
Dear Just and Wise God,
We come to you, with praise and confession. Thank you for the goodness that we can see, and empower us, to be thankful for that which we cannot see. Thank you for life itself, for the measure of health we need to fulfill our callings, for nourishment and for friendship. Thank you for the ability to be involved in useful labor and for the honor of bearing appropriate responsibilities.
Therefore, we especially thank you for those bearing the responsibility of managing our civil society. We pray for our mayor, for the various levels of city officials and, in particular, for this assembled city council.
We pray that they be granted wisdom to govern amid the conflicting interests and issues of our times. We pray for a sense of the welfare and true needs of our people and a keen thirst for justice and charity. We pray for confidence in what is good and fitting and the ability to work together in harmony even when there is honest disagreement. We pray for the agenda set before them today.
Give us all an assurance of what would please you and what would benefit those who live and work in and around our beloved city of San Antonio. We pray for personal peace in all our lives, in the lives of those we love and joy in all our vocations, in service to you we pray. Amen.
